Quick post

Got some gardening done today. I finished the anti-deer cage, with help from my cousin. The stuff I planted from seed is doing great (I thinned them out some today), but the stuff I transplanted isn't so good. The eggplant is dead. I got the extra cayenne pepper into a pot, finally. It's bigger than the one in the garden now. (It was the other way around when I got them.)

Mitzi's been sick the last couple of nights. It's strange; she seems happier most of the time. We tried giving her two small meals instead of one big one. Hopefully that'll help.

I'm spending way to much time on Sims 3. Things look so much nicer with the new customization tools. Mod the Sims has found a way to load fan made patterns into the game. So many possibilities!

30 Yahrens ago tonight (Sept 17)

This is the 30th anniversary of the premiere of Battlestar Galactica. (Yep, still hooked.) I've finished watching the original series and it really was a lot better than I expected. It's not perfect, it was intended to be a series of television movies, but ABC insisted on making it a regular series and the production got rushed. At least one script had to be written in 24 hours! In spite of the problems, I just can't help loving these characters. The show's much more family oriented than the new version, and, quite frankly, much less depressing. There's such a feeling of hope throughout the entire series. That may not be realistic, but it's fun. It's a terrible shame that it was cancelled after just one season even though it was a top 20 show and shows with lower ratings were getting renewed.

This show deserves to be watched (as if a show can deserve anything. :) ) Americans can watch it online at NBC Although for some reason the episodes are in reverse order with the last ones listed first. I'm sure there are other places to find it online you can find the first episode or the feature film that was made out of the first episode.

Anyway, I felt I should do something to mark the show's anniversary.

Oh, and I still prefer Starbuck with Athena not Cassiopeia.

Back, I think

I feel like I haven't posted in ages. Things got kind of crazy for awhile; I didn't seem to have more that a few minutes free time a day. I can get online at school every now and then, but I don't want to log into LJ from there, because the college network is monitored. Anything I can see, they can see. So that's why I haven't been commenting. I'm hoping I have things better organized now.

We're actually running the printing presses at school. It's incredibly messy. It' makes me wonder how books can be so crisp and clean. I don't think I'll ever want to run presses for a living. Maybe when I get more comfortable around them, but I doubt it. It's designs and layouts that really interest me.

I read a great book called the The Truth About Dogs by Stephen Budiansky. It's really funny, but it has a lot of hard science in it, too. His theory on how dogs became domesticated is the first one that really makes sense to me. I think he underestimates dog's comprehension level a bit, but I have to agree that a lot of people over estimate it. He also explains in good hard logic why the current concepts of purebreds has to go. Anyway, if you've got a dog or want to get one, this is a really interesting book.

I went to the library today to try and finds Outlander (that's what they call Cross Stitch around her, as near as I can tell), but it was out. I asked them to reserve it for me, so I should get it soon. It was actually due back on the 16th, so it probably wont be long. I ended up getting Minion by L. A. Banks. It's a vampire slayer book. A lot of people must like it because the copy I got is a special edition with extra scenes. I'm a bit wary about it, though. So many vampire book series seem to degenerate into massive love polygons. (Lost has completely ruined me for love triangles.) It sounds like this is only a trilogy, so maybe it won't go that route.

Does anyone know anything about deviantART.com? I've been thinking about putting up an art site, and I'm wondering if that's a good choice for it. I went to the site but I couldn't find a simple description of the services they offer.

I got my timetable for first semester, and I've got a 4pm to 9pm class on Wednesdays followed by an 8am class on Thursday. I can't believe I'm saying this, but thank God for the hiatus! Hopefully next semesters schedule will be more favourable to Lost. :) I got official confirmation that I've been granted final acceptance today, too. I knew I did everything I was supposed to, but it's nice to hear the red tape's been dealt with.

Lost Finale

I don't know why I'm writing this, because I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. Anyway...

I loved the episode. I was slightly spoiled about the flash forward, but I really tried hard not to read that whole post so I wasn't sure how reliable it was. I was going back and forth the whole ep on whether it was right or not. Those Christian mentions. I wonder if Jack knows what time period he's in. Maybe his sense of past/present/future is all mixed up. At least when he's drunk.

Hurley was so cool this ep. I loved how he could hardly believe that he saved the day. And Sawyer calling him "hero". I love those two together. Maybe now that Charlie's dead (I'm hoping for a miracle, but I'm not expecting it) Sawyer and Hurley will become closer friends. They work well together. Sayid, Jin and Bernard were great, too. I loved Rose making Bernard repeat that he's "a dentist, not Rambo." That whole rescue scene rocked. It's a bit disturbing that Sawyer can kill so calmly now. That's a big change for him, and pretty sad, too.

I loved the Skate stuff. It's so great that Kate finally confronted him about what's going on. I can understand why he's pushing her away. I really love the angst. :) I do wish the Jate alternative wasn't available, though.

The underwater scenes were poignant. I didn't get too upset when Charlie died. I think I said my goodbyes to him last week. When I watched the finale again today, I noticed him crossing himself. That got to me. And Mikael survives again? Up until this ep I was kind of hoping he'd join the Losties. They could use another medic. That can't happen now, though. Penny's reaction when she realizes Charlie knows Desmond, that she's finally found him, was sooo sweet.

And I've got to say (you might not like this Ceci), Danielle totally pwned when she decked Ben. He so had that coming.

I'm still not sure what I think about the direction the show's going in from here. There's so many questions. Most importantly, is the story going to continue from where the flash forward left off, or is Jack somehow going to go back and change the past? I don't know which would be better. Who's in the coffin? IF they're going to change the past, then I'm okay with it being Juliet or even Sawyer. The idea that Jack would change history to save Juliet is kind of romantic. Extremely pretentious on Jack's part, too, but that's Jack. :) Of course, the question I'm most interested in is what does this mean for Skate? Is the "he" Kate's going back to Sawyer? I don't like the idea that their whole relationship developed off screen. And if it is Sawyer, and they're going to change the past, does that undo Skate? As someone around here mentioned, "he" could be someone Kate's using to stay out of jail, but then where's Sawyer? (Or maybe she's out because Hurley covered her legal expenses. That'd be such a Hurley thing to do.)

I think it's going to take most of the summer to figure out whether I like the ending or not.

Lost speculation

Although I've been trying to avoid the spoiler threads, I've been hearing some disconcerting rumours. One of them, about Kate, has got me thinking it might be based on fact, though. Like I said it's a rumour, I've got know reason to believe it's a solid spoiler, but I'll put it behind a cut, anyway.

What I've heard is that Kate's going to die in the finale after Jack accidentally shoots her! I really can't see that happening; I just can't. I could, however, see them using that as the cliffhanger. Wouldn't we have fun spending the hiatus wondering if Kate was going to survive or not? (That was sarcasm, mostly.) That may explain why they won't let Jate die. It'd sure be a twist in their relationship. That still doesn't justify keeping the triangle going, of course. If they really want to get angsty maybe Jack's shooting at Sawyer, but Kate pushes him out of the way. Sawyer'd totally flip out if that happened, especially if things were rough between them at the time. Anyway, I just needed to type some of this speculation out.

Survivor: Herbal Edition

I finally thinned my herbs down to three for a pot. Hopefully I left the strongest ones. It's extremely silly, I know, but I kind of feel sorry for the ones that had to go. That didn't stop me from crushing some of the leaves up a bit. Even with only two proto-leaves the thyme already smells really nice. Only two of the sage plants have come up yet, and they're in the same pot, so one'll have to go. They've grown so fast; they're already as tall as the basil and it came up first. Maybe I'll transplant one of them into one of the pots where nothing's coming up. The first true leaves are starting to form so it won't be long till all of them have to be thinned down to one a pot. For some reason that makes me feel nicely ruthless. LOL

Just Rambling

I've been thinking about Kate's attitude towards Jack lately, and I'm trying to work through my thoughts on the matter. Kate seems to be following the same path her mother did, feeling inferior to domineering men. I wonder if it was just Wayne who was abusive towards Diane. It's not unusual for a woman to get involved with the same type of man again and again. Sam probably never beat beat Diane or Kate would have known, but he could be more subtle and emotionally abusive. Given Kate's reaction towards Jack, I think she's used to being ordered around. Sam could be just as much of a control freak. Part of me wants them to just forget puppy dog Kate and show us kick ass Kate, but I'd also like to see them really deal with the issue of Kate's submissiveness in regards to Jack. I want to see her acknowledge that Jack's not treating her right and that it's much better to be involved with someone that actually admirers her.

I've been reading Ruslaka by C. J. Cherryh. It's set in pre-Christian Russia and is about a man named Pyetr who is, in his own words, "a profligate, a gambler, a liar and occasionally a person of bad character," and Sasha a stable boy who thinks he's a jinx and that his wishes come true in the worst way possible. It starts out with Pyetr getting into a fix when he tries to sneak into a married lady's bedroom. Unfortunately, the lady's husband is there instead and promptly runs Pyetr through with a sword. To make things worse, the old man has a heart attack and dies and the guards decide Pyetr was working with a wizard to kill the man. Pyetr ends up hiding in Sasha's stable, and Sasha takes pity on him. Feeling that he doesn't belong in his Uncle's inn, Sasha escapes the city with Pyetr. The two soon end up in a dead forest where they find a real wizard trying to end the destruction of a rusalka, a ghost of a drowned girl, who happens to be his own daughter. It's a good book so far and Pyetr and Sasha have a definite Sawyer/Hurley dynamic going on.

I've found some nice freeware recently. One is the Answers extension for Firefox 2. You just alt-click on a word or phrase and it opens a small window with the definition. It works on internet slang and famous names, too. It's pretty handy. I've also gotten attached to klipfolio. A little dashboard program that keeps track of the weather and keeps up to date on headlines from various sites like Google News and YouTube. You can set it to watch for keywords and notify you when it finds them. I have it it search for Lost, Kate and Sawyer. I get a lot of stuff that's not Lost related, but it doesn't take long to skim through it. The program can be used to watch RSS feeds, too.
